AppleTree incorporates mechanisms for enhancing the process and outcome of Collaborative Argumentation (CA) and supporting formative (diagnostic) assessment that in order to cultivate learner's collaborative learning and self-directed learning.

It aims to not only help learners learn the subject knowledge deeper, it also develops their 21st century competencies (21CC) such as information, communication and collaboration, critical, creative and inventive thinking.
